SEPTIC TANK, CESSPIT AND SEWAGE TREATMENT SERVICES
A Septic Tank is simply one or more underground chambers constructed, usually of brick or fibreglass, that separates and retains foul solids, allowing the waste water to filter into a drainage field. This basic process fundamentally relies on the property having both free draining soil and sufficient level ground to site a drainage field. There is some basic treatment of the waste in the septic tank via an anaerobic process that reduces some of the solids and organics, but the treatment efficiency is only moderate and relies on a drainage field for further treatment.

Sewage Treatment Plants
A sewage treatment plant treats foul waste from either a domestic or commercial property, to a standard so that it can be discharged directly into a watercourse, drainage field or with a permit to a soakaway. The discharge from a sewage treatment plant does not need further filtration from either a drainage field or by other means. The benefit of a sewage treatment plant is that it can be used in areas where ground conditions are unsuitable to receive waste from a septic tank, such as clay ground, a high-water table or a ground water protection zone.
A Cesspit is a large, sealed underground holding tank designed to receive and store foul waste water. The main disadvantage with a Cesspit is that the only way to remove the waste is with a suction tanker. This means that they can be very expensive to maintain, leading the homeowner to be very cautious about the amount of water they use. Cesspits are generally installed by the house builder, as at the time of construction there were no other options available to manage the property’s foul waste water.

Drainage Fields
A drainage field is designed to disperse and treat the outflow from either a septic tank or sewage treatment plant. It is constructed of rigid perforated or slotted pipework, which is laid in a clean stone surround with a membrane layer before covering with soil. The final effluent passes through the entire length of the drainage field, seeping through the perforations and into the clean stone surround.
